The Rule of Rhyme

The Rule of Rhyme

I READ WITH CERTAIN HESITATION

YOUR VERSE ON FORMING LEGISLATION,

IT BIRTHED IN ME A REVELATION.

A SUDDEN LIGHT OCCURRED TO ME,

THE WAY WE SHOULD MAKE POLICY,

TO KEEP OUR COUNTRY STRONG AND FREE.

THE RULE IS: EVERY LAW MUST RHYME!

FROM HENCEFORTH, PROSE IS OUT OF LINE,

(IF LEGISLATORS MOAN AND WHINE

ABOUT THE TIME IT TAKES TO RHYME,

THEY’LL SIMPLY HAVE TO GET IN LINE.)

WE’LL RHYME THE RULES FOR INSTITUTIONS,

WE’LL EVEN RHYME THE CONSTITUTION,

AND HELP CREATE A “SOUND SOLUTION”,

FOR THIS LEGAL REVOLUTION.

SO PASS THE TIME AND PASS YOUR TESTS,

AND PASS THE LAWS THAT YOU LIKE BEST,

BUT KEEP YOUR SECRET, IF YOU CAN,

THAT POETS, SOON, WILL RULE THE LAND!

This poem was sent to Middle School Students who had poems published in the John Sevier Newsletter when I served on the City of Kingsport School Board.
